A note on which question this answers

What the Indian export sector is actually built to do

The usual pitch for India is scale, and scale is the least useful thing about it. Every major coconut origin has far more raw material than any single beverage brand will consume, so total production tells you almost nothing about whether a given factory can hold your specification.

The more useful fact is what the export sector has organised itself around. India's coconut export business has grown around processed, value-added fractions, which is to say concentrate, powder and finished packaged water, rather than around copra, coconut oil or whole fresh fruit. That shapes which processing capacity exists, which documentation a supplier is used to producing, and how routine it is to be asked for a batch COA.

If your requirement is bulk concentrate or maltodextrin-free powder against a written specification, you are buying into the part of the Indian industry that is set up for exactly that. If your requirement were containers of fresh whole coconuts, the answer would be different and honest advice would send you elsewhere.

The real advantage: you can check almost everything from your desk

This is the part of the India case that holds up, and it gets almost no attention in supplier marketing. Indian food exporters sit inside a registration system whose records are public, which means a buyer on another continent can verify most of a supplier's claims without asking the supplier for anything.

Every credential below is one we hold, listed with the number and the place you check it. Run the same exercise on any Indian supplier you are considering. A manufacturer will hand you these numbers immediately. Anyone who cannot is telling you something.

  • FSSAI licence: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India licence covering the specific manufacturing premises. Ours is issued by the Government of Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration for our Olpad, Surat facility, and is verifiable at foscos.fssai.gov.in. Check that the address on the licence is the factory you were shown, not a head office in another city.
  • US FDA food facility registration: Required of any facility shipping food into the United States. Ours sits under DUNS 873641727 and is verifiable in the FDA's own database. What it does and does not mean is worth reading carefully, which our explainer on US FDA registration covers.
  • NABL laboratory accreditation: India's national accreditation body for testing laboratories publishes a directory of accredited labs against their TC numbers. Our batch testing runs at Lilaba Analytical Laboratories (TC-7179) and Assure Analytical Laboratories, both in Surat. Accreditation is scope-specific, so confirm the lab is accredited for food testing rather than merely accredited.   • Coconut Development Board RCMC: A Recognised Certificate of Membership and Compliance issued by the Coconut Development Board under India's Foreign Trade Policy, confirming the holder as a registered coconut exporter. Ours is RCMC/CDB/00603/2023-2024, valid through 31 March 2028. Note the expiry date on any RCMC you are shown.
  • Importer Exporter Code: Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade and required for any export operation out of India. Its absence is disqualifying. Its presence proves only that the company is permitted to export.

What those documents do not prove

A credential list is only useful if you know what each item is silent about, and this is where a lot of Indian supplier marketing overreaches.

An FSSAI licence is a domestic food safety registration. It says the premises are licensed to manufacture food in India. It says nothing about whether the product meets your destination market's specification. US FDA registration is a registration, not an approval or an endorsement, and the FDA does not certify facilities. A CDB RCMC confirms membership and export registration rather than product quality. An IEC is permission to ship.

None of them replace a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis from an accredited third-party laboratory, which is the only document that describes the material you are actually buying. Freight position, and the one format that complicates it

India's west coast ports serve the Middle East, Europe and the US East Coast on shorter routes than Southeast Asia does. We ship through Mundra and Nhava Sheva. If your blending or bottling site sits in Europe or the Gulf, that geography is a genuine advantage. If it sits on the US West Coast, it runs the other way, and the origins comparison sets out that trade-off properly.

One thing to plan for regardless of lane: concentrate ships cold-chain, and powder does not. A concentrate purchase carries reefer freight and cold storage at destination that a powder purchase simply does not, which is often enough to change a format decision on its own. Duty treatment is the other variable, and it is not one to take from any supplier's marketing page, ours included. Confirm the current rate for your specific HS code and destination with your own customs broker.

The risk worth taking seriously

The honest weakness of sourcing from India is not quality. It is that the supplier base is large and fragmented, and a meaningful share of the companies presenting themselves as coconut water manufacturers are trading houses reselling someone else's production. That is not illegal and it is not always a problem, but it changes what you are buying. A trader cannot give you process control, cannot commit to a batch-to-batch Brix tolerance on a line they do not run, and cannot let you walk the floor.

The test is direct and it works: ask to see the facility, ask who owns it, and ask for the manufacturing licence in the company's own name. A manufacturer answers immediately. Our facility is documented on our factory page and buyers are welcome to inspect it in person by appointment.

Where we sit

The argument we would actually make for India is not that India is the right origin in the abstract. It is that an Indian supplier can be checked more thoroughly, and more independently, than most buyers realise. Run the verification list above against us. Is coconut water from India better quality than from other origins?
Not as a matter of origin. Brix, potassium, sodium and microbiological results are set by the raw material, the harvest window and above all the processing method. A low-heat line anywhere will outperform a high-heat line anywhere else. Compare Certificates of Analysis rather than countries.
What documents should an Indian coconut water exporter be able to produce?
An FSSAI licence for the manufacturing premises, an IEC from the DGFT, a CDB RCMC if they are a registered coconut exporter, US FDA food facility registration if they ship to the United States, and batch-specific COAs from a NABL-accredited laboratory. Does an FSSAI licence mean the product meets my market's standards?
No. FSSAI is India's domestic food safety framework. It licenses the premises to manufacture food in India and says nothing about your destination market's requirements, which is a separate exercise for each market you enter.
How do I tell an Indian manufacturer from a trader?
Ask for the manufacturing licence in the company's own name, ask who owns the facility, and ask to visit. A manufacturer answers all three without hesitation. A trader will usually redirect to specifications and pricing instead.
